Some have asked about the present pandemic and how it aligns with Scripture and the end times. Since Jesus left, there has always been pestilence. The prophecy of Jesus about end times in Matthew 24 talks about this… For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:7-8)
During the years A.D. 541-542, the Byzantine Empire was devastated by the bubonic plague. The plague reoccurred periodically afterward. Some estimates suggest that up to 10% of the world’s population died.
It was in the years A.D. 1346-1353 that the Black Death encompassed the world from Asia to Europe, leaving devastation in its wake. It is estimated by many that it wiped out over half of Europe’s population. The plague changed the course of Europe’s history and the world.
Smallpox was the plague brought from Europe by Cortez and his men which devasted the Aztec and Inca empires and destroyed them. The Black Death in London reappeared in 1665 and over 100,000 people died which was about 15% of London. The Great Plague of Marseille in 1720 killed over 100,000 as did the Russian plague of the same year.
Without air travel the great flu pandemic in the late 1800’s saw the world engulfed in this awful pestilence which ended up killing over 1 million people worldwide. And of course, you have heard about he Spanish flu of 1918-1920 in which it is estimated over 500 million people died worldwide.
In the year I was born, 1957, the Asian flu ravaged the world. It was first reported in February in Singapore and then spread rapidly. The total death toll was more than 1.1 million worldwide, with 116,000 deaths occurring in the United States. In recent years we have had AIDS, the Swine flu, Ebola and Zika.
There is coming a time given to us in Revelation 6 in which we are told that through famine, pestilence and the like a fourth part of humanity on the earth will be killed.
What are we to say to these things? This is no time not to be in good standing with God and to not be saved. With all these things happening, and knowing we are living in the last times, you MUST give attention to eternal matters! You may already have this new plague of Covid-19 and may not survive. You may not get it. You may get in and live a few more years. But the most important thing in your mind should be your relationship with God. If you have not been saved, get on your knees and call upon Jesus today to save you. Give your life to Him!
