Churches have been closed to in person services during this pandemic crisis. We are starting to get some feedback from churches concerning this “new” type of virtual church services. (from onenewsnow.com) “Between March 20 and April 6, the Barna Group surveyed more than 600 Protestant senior pastors in America who serve on Barna’s Church Panel.”
According to the survey, 44% of the pastors surveyed say attendance in the virtual church has increased while 29% reported attendance for virtual church services down from in person services. Nearly all were trying to have some sort of church services online. Most reported that their congregations were doing “ok” while having to stay at home. Nearly all reported that giving was down during this period. Some churches report that they are struggling financially while others report that while giving is down they are still doing well.
What do we make of the virtual church services? Let me give you some observations…
First, I find that virtual church just isn’t the same as in person, face to face, fellowship and worship. I long to get back to the gathering of believers in the church where you can join in praise and worship and feel the presence of God in the congregation of believers.
Second, giving is going to be down. Many are laid off right now and many families struggling. However, I am thankful for those who are faithful to give in spite of difficult times. Thank God when challenged His people are faithful!
Third, the assembly of the saints in church is far more of an encouragement than most of us realized. It is not just about a sermon. The singing, the togetherness, the prayer with one another, all of what we do serves as a real encouragement to others. No wonder the writer of Hebrews told those believers – And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (Hebrews 10:24-25) (ESV)
Let’s look forward to the coming days when we shall meet again in the house of God to worship, fellowship, pray, sing and hear God’s Word. And yes, just be together!
