I was taken aback by an article I recently read in the news. It was about a dating game show (of which I do not watch) in which a bachelorette apparently chooses among young bachelors the one she would like as a husband. The article was about a controversy between this young woman and one of the men. Each proclaim to be “Christians” and he thought sexual relations before marriage was wrong and she revealed she had had casual sex with another contestant twice. Then later on in another article, she related publically she had had casual sex with this other contestant four times. I first thought, this is more information than I want on the news or care about! However, my attention was drawn back to it this week in an online article I read from this woman. In it she said, “I live my life by certain standards…and [I have] a moral compass,” she says. “The conversation about sex can be hard for people to talk about and can make women and men feel a sense of shame. But I can be a woman of faith and also be sex-positive. And I am not going to stop talking about the things that I believe in.” (people.com article by Aili Nahas, August 1,2019) Certain standards…moral compass. That compass must not be the Bible!
Then I read an article about the young mayor of Southbend, Indiana who is running for president on the Democrat ticket. They just had the debate for two nights here in Detroit as Democrats gathered. Mayor Pete Buttigieg, is a homosexual who is married to a man, he is an avid and vocal supporter of pro-LGBTQ issues, as well as abortion on demand being fully funded by the government. Yet, he proclaims that he is an active Christian with a robust faith.
I wonder, just what is the moral compass, the moral guide for many like these two? I mean it cannot be the Bible, at least not all of it. These like many before, even some conservatives, have laid hold of just certain portions of scripture which suit their purpose and cast aside other portions. In some cases, they seek to re-interpret certain portions and seek teachers who will approve of “their” life and lifestyle. Paul told Timothy that in the last days this would be the case. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. (2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV)
In the present church world we face a challenge. Shall our lives guide our belief or shall the Bible guide our belief? Greater still is the question, “Shall our lives, morality, and living be guided by the Bible? There are ominous clouds arising over the church world today. Truth is colliding with the way people live. When living and truth collide, what is the outcome? Either truth will win out or sound teaching will not be listen to and people will turn away from the truth. Such is what is happening today! Hang on!
